Computer Vision Topics in arXiv

This visualization shows 100 topics extracted from cs.CV abstracts using topic modeling. Each chart displays the estimated token count over time. Topics are sorted by their average date, placing the newest topics at the top and classic topics at the bottom.

Colors indicate how fast each topic is growing relative to overall field growth. Since arXiv submissions grow exponentially, all topics increase in absolute terms. The color shows whether a topic is outpacing, matching, or lagging behind the field's average growth rate.

Methodology & Data

Data Source

Abstracts were collected from arXiv's Computing and Vision section (cs.CV) using the arXiv API. The dataset covers submissions from 2015 through 2025.

Topic Modeling

100 topics were extracted using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) via MALLET. Each topic is represented by its most probable words, sorted by weight.

Trend Calculation

The "rising/stable/declining" classification compares each topic's share of total abstracts before and after January 2018. Topics with >20% relative growth in share are "rising"; those with >20% decline are "declining"; others are "stable".

Y-Axis Values

In absolute mode, values represent estimated token counts (word occurrences weighted by topic probability). In relative mode, values show the topic's percentage of all tokens for that time period.
